The Uni Challenge is an annual judo competition between UNSW and Sydney Uni... a great opportunity to see some excellent judo. Find out more at the UNSW Judo Club web-site (Links -> Fun Stuff) ---------- 6/10/2003 ---------- Last day midsession break... uni starts tomorrow :( ---------- 1/10/2003 ---------- Australian Uni Games Judo Competition (Day 2) Returning to Newcastle to fight in the individual events, UNSW Judo Club was represented by Winnie Au and Rita So in the women's divisions and Alex Else, Eric Tirtana, James Susanto, Hugo Lee and Michael Penkov in the men's. After a long wait, the competition finally kicked off with the heavyweight divisions being fought first. Alex Else fought well to take 3rd place in the -81kg category, beating Eric Tirtana with osaekomi (a hold-down) in the end of a tough match. James Susanto fought with brilliant fighting spirit but was unable to secure a place in the fiercely contested -73kg category. Hugo Lee fought well in the -66kg division, defeating one opponent after the other with ippon to secure a place in the final, losing only to the experienced John Burfoot to take silver medal and 2nd place. In the womens' categories, Rita So and Winnie Au faced the experienced Rebecca Halligan of Sydney Uni (also a UNSW Judo Club regular). Winnie fought well, taking the match almost to full time before being caught with a well-timed deashibarai (foot sweep) for ippon. Rita was able to keep the higher ground for the majority of her match after scoring with a take-down, but was unable to escape a powerful uchi-mata seconds before the end of the bout. After a long wait it was time for the men's -60kg division. Despite having to face only one opponent, Michael Penkov still nearly managed a loss after being caught in osaekomi half-way into the match. Luckily, he managed to escape and shortly thereafter ended the match with a suprise left seoi-nage attack to take first place. Overall, a good day for UNSW, with a number of relatively new club members making their competitive debut at this level with promising results for the future. ---------- 29/9/2003 ---------- Midsession break, Australian Uni Games Judo Competition (Day 1) Today was the first day of the AUG Judo Competition, with men's and women's teams competitions marking the start of the week.
